Greetings from Newfoundland
Hello everyone. I have just received good news that I am in and I am very happy and proud about it. Let me introduce myself. I am Russian born living in Newfoundland Canada. This is a beautiful place to live but with arguably bad climate. My primary occupation is physics but now I spend more and more time painting and I hope to develop this into a part-time job. I started painting a few years ago and I am self-taught. My primary source of knowledge was Internet and especially this Forum. I also bought a few books among which I would like to mention a book on skin tones by Chris Saper (for me as a physicist it was a pleasure to read about color temperatures). Please take a look at my 'professionally looking' website.
Here I would like to throw in a couple of images. The first one is self-portrait which I did in 2005 and then revised recently. You know of course from whom I borrowed that wooden bar! The second image is a female figure which I painted following the tutorial by William Whitaker. I was trying to learn how to paint the folds of fabric and the skin tones. I am not sure what Master would say about this attempt.

Welcome to the forum, Iakov! As a self-taught artist myself, I can vouch for the fact that you can find a lot of educational opportunities right here.

Alexandra, Carlos, Dan,
Thank you very much for your kind words.
Carlos, the wood is indeed from Rembrandt's 1640 self-portrait. I tryed to imitate the pose too.

Welcome to the forum.
I tried to visit your website, but the link didn't work.
I liked your paintings, specially the self-portrait.

It's nice to meet you, Iakov. Welcome. I like the transitions of light to darks in the folds of your fabric. Nicely and effectively done!
