Art Boot Camp in October!

October 6-9, I will be offering the "Art Boot Camp" course in my studio near Blackfoot, Idaho.

The course will run four full days over a weekend, and primarily covers the basic approach to understanding values developed by Roberts Howard (author of The Illustrator's Bible). This session will focus especially on painting tools, materials, supports and their preparation (panels and canvases), mediums (a practical approach to clear up all the confusion!), and "studio secrets" in general.

For full information on the course, you may PM me on this forum, or send an e-mail to:

[email protected]

Early October in Southeast Idaho is normally beautiful, with clear sapphire days, highs near 70, and cool nights (may freeze). We're near to the vacation attractions and art galleries of both Sun Valley and Jackson Hole, Wyo. With room for only five in the studio, the course fills fast!

Here's a snapshot of the studio, with "happy campers" at work on a value problem.

To all whom might not know Richard, if he is as good of teacher as he is a person, this workshop must be wonderful.

Thank you for your kind words, Beth. The folks whom it has been my pleasure to instruct are very supportive.

The boot camp is (obviously) not a "learn to paint like --(your favorite artist)" kind of course. What it is, is systematic analysis for dealing with color values in order to render realistically from life. Clarity of understanding how to approach painting from life results from working out solutions to the problems presented in each day's painting practice.

Certainly the course offers a definite jump-start for a beginner, but experienced painters and not a few professionals who have taken the course seem to benefit even more from the fresh viewpoint the boot camp course provides, because they are familiar with battling the problems each practical addresses.

Layered into the instruction are logical methods for setting the studio and lighting the subject to insure your success, and a wealth of simplified, factual information on paint, mediums, tools, materials and brushes that ends confusion and provides solid foundation for making paint handle as you command.

A gentle reminder that this week brings us to the middle of September already! If you're thinking of the boot camp, better act now, we still have a couple of spots open.
