The Russian

This was a little head study done on an odd sized piece of left-over Masonite (about 11 x 12). I've been using masonite more and more, lately. I can buy a 4 x 8 foot sheet of masonite for $5.50. I can usually get 15 to 20 "canvases" from this one sheet. I sand the smooth surface, and then apply a generous coat of gesso with a stiff-bristled old plastic scrub brush. Makes a nice texture beneath the painting.

Hi Richard,

That is a really warm Russian. Did you use any other cool colors besides his hat? I love usiing Masonite too. It's nice to cut it just right for frames on hand and I like the nice smooth surface. I hate sanding it though after priming it.

Tammy
