I'm working on cleaning up things on the Forum and ran across this - I love this painting.

It's been several years

Hi Cynthia,

It's been several years, hasn't it? It is good to hear from SOG again. Well, This picture still is beautiful but somehow now, it seems that there is too much surrounding her in too small a space. The shadow over the right shoulder seems out of place, and the flowers are placed a little too carefully to my eye. It they are important they should have more room. I still like the thoughtful mood and delicate touch.

Joseph, you have a dynamic subject, pose and composition. Being that you seek a critique I will be honest and share what I see and understand.

First the hair is well done in many respects but the hair in shadow is not blond and does not read blond. You mite think about introducing more light to the hair on the light side. Next, this mite be a strange observation even though I have not seen the person but I am not sure if this is true in real life for her nose seems a tad to long. Look at the shadow side of the face and ask your self these questions does it look real, would the shadow under the eye be this dark in real life, do I get the feeling that the face on that side sags a bit, is the bottom lip on that side to thick or is it the angle, how are my edges, are they soft or sharp where need be comparing to life or are they sharp like in a photo.

I sincerely hope this helps.
