Best Friends
This is a mixed media piece I did for the cover of a big dance review book. It is 16 x 20 on tan Stonehenge paper. The girls are 85% prismas and the background is gouache and pastels. This gig didn't pay much but there are worse things than having the parents and grandparents of 120 young girls keep a copy of one of your paintings for years!! I have had a few calls already! It has already printed so I can't change anything but any comments or critiques are welcome as always. A blonde hair, blue-eyed girl and a olive-skinned dark-eyed girl in the same drawing was a lot of fun! Thanks Ann Kullberg for writing such a great comprehensive book on colored pencil portraits!

Wow, that looks like it was a lot of fun to do. I particularly like the way the polka dot dresses merge. It is an interesting design element. How long did it take you to complete this?
I hope you get some commissions from this piece as it is very good advertising for you.

I spent about 10 hours on the girls themselves. The background was a couple more hours. I had originally intended to include more detail in the background, but at the last minute I changed my mind. It was met with great response! I have had a lot of feedback from it already. A local magazine publisher has called me and wants to include me in an upcoming issue. It is mailed into the homes of people who have higher income. I have also had several calls from parents. The blonde on the cover is posing for her separate portrait next week on a beach with a long pale pink cotton dress that her great grandmother made for her mother. I did not get paid much for this cover, but the publicity is going to be great!

Rebecca,
It would be great to hear your experience with this over in the Business, PR & Marketing section. It's an idea I haven't heard about before.

I'll do that, Cynthia. It had been a lot of fun. You know those mommas! They will keep those books forever!
