This is a second drawing of my sister-in-law from the same sitting. It's 10x14 graphite highlighted with white pastel on textured side of gray pastel paper.

What's up! This is a beautiful drawing. The composition & draftsmanship are excellent. You rendered the hair perfectly, although I think the highlights draw attention away from the face. Perhaps you could use a little license & tone down the intensity in the hair, and brighten up the lights on her face. Other than that, firme!

Absolutely striking; this one really has presence.

Something interesting from a David Leffel video I watched a couple of weeks ago:

The near shoulder describes support (for the head, for the gesture); the far shoulder describes distance.

I can't wait to see the stuff you post when you find a figure/life group.

Thank you very much! As far as the hair goes, I was actually thinking the same thing, but I wanted to see if someone brought it up. It's not as strong a contrast on the original and the paper is darker than you may see it. While I was putting the highlights in, the one's on the face were too strong so I toned them down. The highlights on her hair seemed strong on paper, but accurate from reference as the source of light was less than five feet away from her head. I agree with using licence, and plan on toning down the highlights without the reference.

Thank you again. The quote makes a lot of sense, and I usually use that approach without thinking about it. I had a class in college where one teacher, Mr. Klutz, would stress stronger lines near and fainter lines far.

Hope to start the class/group sooner than later!
