This is a charcoal portrait with white chalk highlights, size 14 x 17 finished last night.

Beautiful job, Josef. Especially the hair. Exquisitely rendered.

Jimmie Arroyo 03-14-2004 10:59 PM

Josef,

Excellent job. Haven't seen much of your work lately, unless I've been sleeping, but glad to see you again. The first thing that strikes me is the size of her right eye, but I like it. Then it leads me to the left eye, which seems a bit off, not that it bothers me, but just makes me wonder. Overall, excellent, hope to see more.

Chris Saper 03-14-2004 11:14 PM

Josef,

This is far and away your very best work to date (of course, of those I've seen..)

You should be so thrilled, and rightly so.

Patricia Joyce 03-15-2004 12:18 AM

Josef,

Where have you been? Busy, I guess, drawing because this is really beautiful. Her expression, and the way she is holding her head, reaches out and grabs a hold of the viewer. The rendering of the hair is VERY good.

Hope to see you post more!!!

Pat

Thanks everyone.:) I really had fun doing the hair. I have been occupied with the little one. I try to sneak 15-30 minutes of work time here and there. I finally got to finish this piece the other night when my daughter went to bed earlier. It was a really quick sketch study for the longest time for an oil piece I am doing.

Jim, you are right on the right eye. It seems a bit off. I'll try to correct it since I did not put the fixative yet.

I should be more present after April since I will be taking 3 months off for parental leave from work. Cannot wait :sunnysmil

Beautiful work, Josef!

Glad to see you drawing and posting again.

Mary Sparrow 03-15-2004 10:10 AM

GREAT job! ;)

Jimmie Arroyo 03-15-2004 10:34 AM

If that's just a quick sketch, then it's better than I thought. Congratulations on having a daughter, first child?

Looking foward to seeing what you do during your leave, if your daughter lets you! :D

Wonderful job, Joseph. I like these monochromatic drawings. Keep 'em coming!

Best wishes,

This is beautiful - just lovely!

I have a theory - IF her eyes are off a bit it is because she is a mother and one eye is on the child...the other on her husband. ;)

Josef Sy 03-16-2004 08:08 AM

Thanks everyone for the kind words.

Jim, I meant it started off as a quick sketch. I put a couple more hours into after I think. And yes, it is my first child. Hopefully I can do some work when she goes for naps. :)

Garth Herrick 03-17-2004 11:08 PM

Hi Josef,

You have a really original portrait. I like your unusual point of view.

Garth

Josef Sy 03-19-2004 08:53 AM

Thanks Garth. I found the pose to be the classical "looking up to the heavens" kind of pose but then again the "leaky roof " kind of pose. :D hehe

Terri Ficenec 01-02-2005 01:04 PM

Hi Josef -- don't know how I missed this last Spring. Beautifully done!

John Crowther 01-02-2005 03:10 PM

This is really beautiful work, Josef. Yes the only thing that struck me as "out of tune" was the subject's left eye. It seems to me that the problem is that it's a bit dark in relation to the right eye, so that it looks clouded over. Perhaps if you lift it in value some. Otherwise, splendid.

John C.

Josef Sy 01-03-2005 08:44 AM

Thanks Terri and John. I fixed the left eye but I forgot to post it. I will have to dig it somewhere in my pc.

Here is the retouched version. It is still a bit off. It really tough doing the fine details or adjustments in charcoal. Does anyone have any tricks aside from very sharp point and a lot of patient? Love to hear some if you have...
