Sharon, I'll attempt to clarify what I said.
The Wallis papers come in two grades "Wallis Archival Grade" and "Wallis Professional Grade" as you are probably aware. My intention was to refer Hanna to the Archival Grade Wallis paper as well as Ampersand Pastelbord, masonite coated with acrylic gesso and marble dust. Both of these products stand up to washes. Handell had recommended Turpenoid or alcohol, using the alcohol when he wanted a faster drying time. I don't know what chemical effect the alcohol would have either to be honest. It does evaporate quickly though and does tone the support without filling the tooth as fast.
As far as Mr. Handell's book goes, it's a small paperback titled
"Painting the Landscape in Pastel" published by Watson-Guptill. I bought it awhile back from Amazon. It's full of his beautiful landscapes surrounded by words that convey his methods and materials. I think you can see his work at the Pastel Society of America site, because he is in their Hall of Fame.
