Shadows and water issues

Hello, I am here for my first critique. I completed the 'Old Danish Fisherman'. I had some issues with the facial shadows - are they dark enough. I also struggled with the water as I did tried to paint in some light ripples, to represent the sky, but painted them out when they did not look good. I am seriously ready to learn, so please make some suggestions.
