I so enjoyed your comments on "Captive Son" that I am going to plunge in again. This is actually a newer portrait (completed a week ago - but as always in progress). It's an oil on canvas board, 7.5" x 6" - so quite small. At this size I think you can get away with a very dark, flat background. Actually I like almost black backgrounds because the focus then is entirely on the figure. My apologies for the light reflection at the top of the painting.
