Brother big and little

This is a work in progress but didn't want to post it in the WIPs because there's so much going on there already, and because this is just a watercolor.
I am at a point where I'm afraid to deepen shadows for fear of making mud. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Even if you aren't a watercolorist maybe you can just share your impression on what does or doesn't look right.

I can't guarantee color accuracy. I tried to adjust in photoshop but was unable to get consistent color. But I think these are within acceptable range.

Here's the reference photo. This isn't a commission, of course. Just practice. I'm taking some artistic liberties.
I drew freehand on the watercolor paper.

Hi Brenda -

It looks like it's cooking along pretty well. I can't comment on the watercolor - I think the likenesses are there and will show up even better once all the modeling is in.

But - why use flash? I would've recommended a better reference photo.

Hi Julie,
This was a found photograph. I just thought it was so cute that I wanted to use it. I'm working on painting in the light coming from the upper right of the picture, so putting more shadow on the left side.
