Peggy's "The Artist's Magazine" Article

The February 2003 issue of The Artist's Magazine features an article, "Built to Last," that I wrote on my oil portrait method. Although I have written on drawing and marketing, this marks the first time I have ever published an article on painting an oil portrait.

The article presents, in a precise step-by-step manner, the way I construct a portrait.

The model for the article was Andrea Lange

Peggy,

I love the rich red and mauve tones you have used. With those colors the blond girl really stands out. I will make sure to read your article.

I have a question for you. When publications contact you, do they ask you the questions and write their own piece or do you submit a written report that gets edited?

How do you prepare for interviews? How many picture samples do you submit? Etc..

One of the most interesting things about Peggy's numerous articles and her videos is that she is very organized, has a lesson plan, and is extremely articulate; all of these things must be a blessing for an art magazine editor, but more importantly, she packages the complex and often-overwhelming process of painting a head in a way that even a beginner can follow her instructions and end up with a very evolved painting.

Enzie, that's just my observation. I'm sure she'll get to your question when she returns from Mexico (Jan. 27th, I think)...

Hi Mari,

Thank you for letting me know about Peggy's return. I have been in touch with her through E mail, in regards to teaching a workshop in California in October for SOCAL-ASOPA.

I just got the "Artist's Magazine" February issue and can't wait to re-read the 5 page article on Peggy's approach. For those who do not subscribe to this magazine, may I suggest you go pick one up. The painting here is shown in a step by step approach and Peggy talks about color correction and her palette, among many other things.

Such a treat!

This will be such a treat for me to see/read! I was in the workshop this summer following the one that Peggy painted of Andrea. I saw the model and saw the painting.

I'm sure this article will be just what many on this forum are seeking to learn as far as technique, palette and great advice from a great pro. Can't wait to see it!

Yes, Enzie, Peggy's portraits pull me into them by the richness of her background and fabric colors. I strive for the same richness in my painting - hmmmmmm.
