The Orientalist Gallery - A new Site
After collecting over 170 Orientalist paintings on my computer alone, plus numerous books on the subject, I have decided to upload everything and create a web site. This web site is different, in so far that not only the paintings are shown, but information is given about the techniques and compositional tricks the artists have employed. This information is a collection of writings by art historians, art dealers, etc. and the source of the material is always provided.
This is a project in progress and new works will be added hopefully on a daily basis. If you like to contribute or add any information about a painting, please add it in the "comments" box. I would greatly appreciate it, since this is a huge undertaking and I can use all the help I can get.
I am sharing this information since even as portrait painters there is a wealth of information that can be very useful, when thinking about composition, design, color, symbolism, etc.
There is an RSS sign up on the web site (at lower right side of page) , where you can register and receive automatic Email updates of every new photo posted.

Enzie,
What a great idea this is! I looked into your site and it looks like a site that can be quite informative and helpful in this subject matter. I have a large book on Spanish painters of the late 19th century, a generation of painters who studied in Rome and formed a community of artists there (most famous of whom was Mariano fortuny) and they did quite a few orientalist paintings aside from the official hisorical paintings they were obliged to fulfill. Let me know if you need material on these artists (if you don

Your site will provide a much-needed resource, and show some wonderful paintings. It's a splendid idea, and I wish you lots of success with it.

Dear Thomasin,
Thank you! With the increase in exhibits and publications it seems that the interest in Orientalist art, after a very, very long slumber is finally reawakening. I think once people realize the genius behind some of these works, they will look at it from a different view point other than harem scenes and old men in turbans.
These paintings have so much they can teach us, but finding centralized access to technical information, comparisons and general insight are not that easy. I hope to change that by this little contribution!

Enzie,
Just saw this post and the one dated 22/Aug where you ask about info on the images I sent you. Million apologies for this delay. Let me know which images I sent you exactly and if you still need the text, and I promise to send the needed info right away.
Thanks.
