Great Expectations

Hello,

This is my most recent painting, finished only yesterday. It is going to be a competition piece in our Indiana State Fair juried Art Show. This show is one of the biggest in the state and it will be my first year entering with an oil painting. It is the biggest project I have ever done in any medium with the most elements also. The size is 36" X 28".

Phew! I'm so glad it is finished as are my poor long suffering children! They had to make their own lunches, and fend for themselves all week while I worked away on it.

Thank you for looking,
Julie

Julie,

I like this composition - and the stained glass is just lovely. Good luck!

Julie, yes I agree that the composition was arranged well. I love how the vine pattern surrounds her head. It is subtle but keeps the eye looking at her face.

I have noticed a substantial improvement in your work on this one and your work was so nice before. Your skin tones are lovely. I find them to be softer or something. Maybe its just this particular young woman who is gentle looking. The way the light appears to be coming from the left behind the glass really adds to the mood and sets your subject off as it darkens in value on our right. I think you have done an excellent job rendering the stained glass. Finally, I do like that right hand! I can see you have picked up much of that reflected color surrounding her.

I really could go on about how obvious it is that you have worked hard on this and the tremendous strides you have made. Each one of your paintings is miles better than the one before it. You are putting lots of love and effort into your work and are obviously dedicated. It sure is paying off. I wish you the very best in your competition!

I gotta say, I think what I like most about this painting is the way that the figure does'nt get lost against detail and color. In many cases, there are distracting elements that take the viewer's eye away from the subject, but it does'nt happen here which is a great accomplishment. Congrats and good luck.

Thank you Kim, Lisa and Jimmie! Especially for the good luck wishes. I'm going to take them and run with them. This State Fair competition is very stiff and I'll be so happy to just be juried in. The artist that won Best of Show last year was recently chosen to paint our former Governor's official portrait. It sure is something to shoot for!

I also appreciate all of you mentioning the composition of this piece. The stained glass background underwent many changes during the planning stages as well as the painting stages. Thank you so much Jimmie for saying that it doesn't detract from the subject. That was my goal and I'm especially glad you noticed it.

Lisa, you're always so kind to me. I really appreciate your encouragement!

Thanks again,
Julie
