Titian

I get these great books, coffee table size, at Half-Price Books for a couple bucks. This one was a real find in that it has about six paintings blown up to 8 x 10 in black and white! So I am doing monochromatic studies of them.

This was the simplest, to start with, so here is my wash-in after working on it all day yesterday. I worked on it until the sun went down and I lost good light so it is "weak" still in the chin and mouth area. I spent most of the day on the eyes and nose. I see that the left (our) side of his face is a bit wider than the reference.

Anyways, thanks for looking.

Advice please! I cannot find this painting in color except for a small 2" pic in the book I have. My question to you professionals - should I paint over this in gray as further exercise or call this "assignment" complete and move on to my next project? I wonder how it would benefit me to paint it in gray???

Patricia,

Try looking at the Art Renewal Center online (I dont have the link right here) for a color copy if there is one.

My first thought when looking at this is that his features - eyes, nose and mouth and too small for the face compared to the original. But - its hard to tell because the original posted larger. Just take a peek at that in case Im correct.

Thanks, Kim, I will check out ARC. I am afraid I did post them different sizes - I'm a clutz with this photoshop. When I look at it at home and compare I see that I have widened his face and his mouth is definately off. I went in with white pastel and made corrected suggestions (lines) so that if I move on to paint this in grays the drawing will be accurate.

Thanks for the help! I do appreciate it.

Hey Patty,
Check this out. I used Photoshop and did a line drawing from the original, took that and brought it over to your painting. I lightened your painting so that you could see the lines better. I lined up the ears, chin and did my best to make it the size of your painting. Notice it's off in a couple of areas. This is what I do to my paintings even though I don't seem to follow it much! ! ! I always have to go back and do it again and again. Oh well, good thing I love to paint!
