Wonderful Sorolla pics
I wanted to send some really great jpegs of Sorolla to a friend and when searching on the net I could not find the really great ones that I have seen in books etc. Does anyone have any good sources for the man's better pieces?

Tim, I have a book on Sorolla titled "The Painter: Joaquin Sorolla". It is a 264 page paperback published in 1989 by Philip Wilson Publishers Ltd, 26 Litchfield Street, London WC2H 9NJ. It was published in conjunction with exhibitions of his work at several museums in the U. S. and Spain of that same year.
I bought the book from The Hispanic Society of America, 613 West 155th Street, New York, N.Y. 10032. Their Telephone No. is 212 926-2234 and the book was $30.00 when I bought it in 1993 and I believe slides came with the book although they are lost among studio clutter at the moment.
It gives a lot of personal and professional info on the painter and his family.

I went to Amazon.com to find this book and found that it is out of print. A used copy (hardcover) is currently going for aprox. $74 and there are 21 buyers waiting in line for copies to turn up.
Dang.

Thanks Jim, sounds like just one more wise investment in art you made according to Karin's remarks!

For the book mentioned, go to this page in my bookstore:
http://www.portraitartist.com/bookst...-after1800.htm
Go down the page in the right column til you see anything by Sorolla. Then click on the little Alibris icon anywhere you see it at the end of a book narrative for Sorolla.

I guess I should not have been surprised regarding the scarcity of the Sorolla book. You might want to check with the Latin Society in case some future printings are in the works. The Society sponsored his sensational 1909 show.
The return on the book has been very good but doesn't compare to the books and charcol drawing prints that I bought in the eighties on Nicolai Fechin. In no case would I give up any of them short of losing my senses.
Anyway, Joaquin sends his regards and a copy of his self portrait.

A couple of years back I was in Spain. I went to the Sorolla Museum in Madrid. It was wonderful. The problem was that they did not sell any books there. I considered myself lucky to find one, the last one at a bookstore in downtown Madrid. They did allow for picture taking without a flash and I took some pictures of paintings not in the book. My present digital camera does not take small enough pictures to post myself on this forum, but I will send one to Cynthia and maybe she can post it.
