My first portrait

This is my first portrait attempt. It's done with Rembrandt pastels 10x13 on Canson mi-teintes. It's also my first attempt at using a digital camera, which I used in the evening. The work not a green or grainy as this picture represents, but I'd like your comments on the results. Thank you

Self Portrait

I'm curious. Is this a self-portrait?

ReNae,

Very nice job with the drawing, the picture shows good use of value and delineation of form. I can't comment on color as the picture is probably not an accurate depiction of your work. The expression is warm and inviting. Do you work primarily in pastels? If so, I would encourage you to study the work of Harley Brown, he even has a book out which is really good.

My advice would be to play with edges more. Also read Schmid's book: "Alla Prima", it has a chapter about edges which is just fantastic.

The only other thing I can add is good job, and keep painting!

Kyle

Nice work - you have good drawing skills.

ALWAYS be sure to use a single source of light on your subject....you'll get a stronger, more professional and more painterly image when you do.

Thank you for your comments.

This is done from my mother's 1948 H.S. Grad picture. She loved it for Christmas. I've been trying to get oil paint results, from pastels. After seeing work by Jane Lund, I was inspired. I schooled in oil painting in H.S. myself but that was along time ago. I would like to begin again, but need guidance on: What material to buy first, and any good instructional materials that can be obtained inexpensively. Perhaps this is fodder for a new topic?

ReNae,

You might want to take a look at the following topics and see if some of your questions are addressed there and then post about anything where you still need answers:

Must Haves for the Studio

Book Advice for the Beginner

Recommended Books for the Portrait Painter

Most of the books mentioned are linked to Amazon where you can read more about them and order if you so choose.

Good luck!
