Ok, Karin, I bit!!!
This was a unique experience for me. Lot's of problems detected here. I will elaborate.
This by no means is a copy of Velazquez, (100 pardons, please Senor Velazquez) but it was fun and a great deal was learned from this one experience. All I can say is this is "a pastel attempt!!!"
1. Be very careful as to the value of paper being used. I could not get the coverage that I wanted. I chose a paper too light in value. Maybe Chris Saper can help me here. Notice all the pinholes still visible to the viewers eye. Blending would not fill them in. A blending tool was of no use. The value of the paper (or color) was canson, pearl. This added frustration to an already large task.
2. If you decide to try to copy a "Master" use a good copy and/or photo of the piece. I used a computer print out. Again adding to the frustration. The colors were not at their best, so there was a great deal of guessing here. I am not a computer buff so trying to deal with changes in photoshop only made the reference worse.
3. Choose your size of support and measure carefully. I began way to small 11x15 or approximately a half sheet of canson. Paint your rendition larger so you can see what you are doing and have room to work.
4. Measure carefully. As you might see, the head tilt was off, which, I am afraid threw the entire painting off. I didn't catch this until halfway through the piece. Steven, I think I am going to rig myself up one of the plumb bobs or whatever you call it.
It is my endeavor to help the next person who will try this. Was it worth it? Yes, I learned a great deal, it was fun and worth every frustration. And, I will certainly try again. Maybe this time leaving poor Velazquez alone to rest in peace, choosing some other poor Master.

PS Happy Easter and Happy Holiday to all.
