Exercises for painters?

I've been unsuccessful in my search for a local atelier-style facility. Does anyone have specific drawing/painting exercises they could suggest? For instance, I knew someone who painted with Nelson Shanks, whose then-favorite exercise was painting a brick, outdoors.

I'm a firm believer in doing exercises to master specific skills. I'm interested in what specifically works for other painters on this Forum.

Thanks in advance.
