The first thing that struck me about this artwork (portrait or figurative, whichever it may be) was the expression on the child's face. It is intense and compelling, not only as an indication of internal complexity. but also as a suggestion of what she is looking at i.e. what outside or beyond the picture frame. Her expression is further offset by that of the trusting animal beside her.
I love the way you have used the pastels--technique and color complexity and richness.
As for the difference between portraiture and figurative work, I personally think this could be either, and that there is an overlap.
