I think duct tape would wor for awhile until the tube began to "krinkle" due to being rolled from the bottom.

Some art stores sell empty tubes, open at the bottom, and with a cap on top. If you could find one of these, it would be relatively easy to transfer the color.

I think Jerry's Artarama (http://www.jerrysartarama.com/) carries them.
