Thanks Linda - quite an insightful comment, and exactly what I was aiming for in the interaction between the subject and the background. This was a hard commission. His features are quite distinctive and non-traditional. I wanted to capture his wisdom and warmth along with his "thousand-yard stare" (from a friend of his who saw the painting in progress).
