Thanks for the information. I did look at the artists on the Stroke of Genius site, beginning with those in the states we'd be traveling through. As you said, portrait art is generally not displayed publicly. However I was hoping to find something like the Matteucci Galleries that show William Whitaker's paintings. I did stumble upon the Portrait Society of Atlanta's web site who (unfortunately for me) recently concluded their spring juried exhibition, and a few portrait brokers' web sites, who said they keep a couple of paintings on display, but mostly portfolios.
I continue to learn so much from portrait artist's paintings in books, but seeing others' paintings in person would be a completely new level of inspiration. Perhaps I should be looking more for old masters work displayed in museums. I'd love to see an original Bouguereau.
