Dante

Hello friends,

It's been a long time since I was an active member of the forum. There have been a number of life changing circumstances that have happened in the middle of my last post, and this one. It's been almost a decade since I've been here, so I thought I'd show a piece that I did recently for a book on Dante. Before I begin the oil painting that will be born from this, some of you may have some helpful thoughts about the drawing for me.

One thing I did learn is that the head gear will have to be changed. What I thought was a hood while viewing Gustave Dore illustrations of Dante is actually not a hood at all. I'll make that change before the oil painting is started.

Now, for the test. I hope I can post the image properly.

Hi Anthony

Nice drawing and tone. Wondering what type of material this would be as it seems a bit stiff?

I am like you, I haven't been here for 6+ years (probably longer) completing a business degree to bring in the bill paying money while I gather the dregs of my energy left after an exhausting day to reconnect to my art. If only to do sketching or drawing for 30 minutes a day.

I wish you all the best and am glad your back here as this forum last time I was here is a wealth of information and support with like minded people.

Best of Luck.
Ngaire

Hello Ngaire,

Thank you for your post. As to your question, the drawing was done in charcoal. I began with vine charcoal, went into charcoal pencil and then, finished off the most intense darks with compressed charcoal.

I'm happy to be back after so long. For me to return, I needed to focus on portraiture. When I was here in the pat, I was more of a still life artist with a desire to become a portrait artist. I feel further along in way to being a portrait artist now. The forum is quieter now than it was back then. There seem to be fewer posts than I remember.

Well, wishing you the best.
Anthony
