A recent magazine find, "Portrait Highlights", contains within it a demonstration by Andrew Manry Kenyon. As the attached page of the magazine shows, fixed at the top of his pastel paper are two photo's. The photo on our right is the ultimate image that Andrew is working toward. The most instructive thing to me is the presence of the second photo on our left. I doubt that he would have attempted this portrait with only the photo on the right.

I hope I don't get sued for reproducing this. If I do I'm dragging every last one of you down with me.

Mike,

I have "Portrait Highlights" and this is a darling little girl. I had to laugh about the reproduction rights and suing etc. because I am chomping at the bit to paint your photo "In Daddy's Hands" I think is the name.

Anyway, the last photo critique you posted with the baby in the father's hands, I love that picture! If you granted me permission (picture big puppy dog eyes here), it would be used as a sample and not for resale. I have a huge show coming up and I am searching for subjects!

P.S. Go ahead and paint the little girl.... we won't tell anyone!

Hi Mike,

I have seen this demo published elsewhere and agree it is wonderful. Andrew's mom is the extraordinary and very accomplished Ann Manry Kenyon (my first portrait/first pastel teacher), and Andrew's talent and training speak for themselves.

One of the things Ann stresses in her workshops is making sure you have taken the right detail photos (and plenty of them) when you do the photo shoot.
