Portrait on Spec

I'm considering contacting a local councilman to do a portrait on spec to help generate some publicity for potential new work. Is there an observed protocol in contacting a prospective subject? For example, should I request a meeting or simply drop off my portfolio/letter and await their reply? Further, should I offer the piece at a nominal fee since they're a politician and unlikely able to receive gifts?

Thanks in advance,

Kevin

No "perfect way"

Hi Kevin,

I think it's a great idea.

I've had good results with a simple letter and business card, explaining my proposal and asking for a meeting. Then, at the meeting, I brought an original portrait with me as an example.

I'm sure there's plenty of ways you could do this.

Thanks Julie. Your idea sounds simple and logical as far as getting that important meeting. I may include a couple of images with the letter as well as a business card. Problem is I don't have any painting on hand that is relevant to the genre (political portrait) and may just hire a model to do an initial portrait. Crazy perhaps, but it would give him - in this instance - a good idea of my style and what to expect. Thanks again for your excellent advice.

Sounds good.

Of course, if you could sell him on being that "first" in your political category, you might not need to do an extra portrait.

Let us know how it turns out! Best of luck...

Will do...thanks for the encouraging words.

Kevin
