Shipping framed pastel to Germany
I had serious sticker shock today. The cost of shippiing a framed (with glass) 16 x 20 pastel to Germany from the US by UPS would be $350.
Any suggestions by those who do a lot of shipping would be much appreciated. Thanks, Alicia |
Alicia,
Is this price including the price of boxing the art for you? Because if you buy your own packaging system, if ought to reduce your sticker shock. I've used a box from this co: http://www.airfloatsys.com/shop/index.php and have used just one box - over and over - for shipping (I reinforced it with packaging tape to help it last longer). Hope this helps. Also, here's some links from this web site on the subject: http://forum.portraitartist.com/show...light=shipping http://www.portraitartist.com/resources/shipping.htm |
Thanks Julie,
I googled "shipping pastels" yesterday and came across AirFloat. Yes, that was a price for packaging the work, but I could buy an airline ticket and take it myself for that price! I will also check with FedEx, looks like people on the Forum have better luck with them than UPS. Thanks for the links too. Alicia |
Fedex has special shipping services for fine art which are not so expensive unless, but the insurance might change the prices.

Claudemir,
Unfortunately, FedEx no longer has a special rate for shipping art, but they are more reasonable than UPS. I did order a box from AirFloat Systems for $80 including their shipping fees. These boxes can be re-used (If you can get the person to mail it back!!). I understand shipping charges in Germany are higher than here in the US. Thanks to all for the great advice. Alicia |
When I shipped a psstel, I removed the glass, and they had a framer install it there.

April is right. I recommend you not ship the glass.
