Copy of Uglow
 

This is a copy of a Euan Uglow done as a homework project for a class, oil on canvas, 16x20. I enjoy making master copies, even though this is not one I would have chosen to copy. Now that I have my painting on the computer screen next to the original, I see all kinds of adjustments that could be made, that I was blind to before. Funny how that works. I would welcome comments even though the class semester is over.

I love this painting and it is really a shame that Tate Britain at the moment is not displaying it. I spent ages looking at it, in love with the incredibly rich surface of this work and I think it is a very good assignment.
I think your copy is very close to the original in the drawing, although it looks like your lighter values are slightly too light and the application of the paint is smoother than the rough marks the Uglow normally used.

This is a very good occasion to appreciate the unity in Uglow's paintings, which are built on relationships, on mapping the structure of the body, and the depth of his observations.
Uglow also had a very deep understanding of composition and design of the picture, and how to make his colours sing, as it has been said he had "an eye for beauty".
I hope you have enjoyed studying his work, perhaps he can't be called an old master (yet) but his work is rooted in old masters' paintings and I find it a very smart choice for learning.
