Here is a 12X16 oil on panel study/sketch of my niece . . . three sessions, I think. I'd appreciate your comments. BTW, I used a very simple palette on this (as well as most of my flesh work) consisting of ivory black, alizarin crimson perm., yellow ocher and burnt umber . . . very simple, very effective.

Nice colors, Richard. I really like your color scheme, especially in the lively background.
Not much to comment on. I would consider softening the line of her jaw, though. She's an attractive young lady, and will be even more so with those edges softened up a bit. |

It's a great composition, very dynamic! I like her expression, too. You've handled the limited palette so well, but I have one minor critique: the grey shirt pops right out at me because it doesn't relate (in terms of color and light) to the rest of the painting. I would expect the light area of the shirt to have slightly more warmth in it, and the halftones and shadows to have more color and depth--more like the shoulder strap in the shadow. Maybe if the shadow at the bottom was closer to that color? Just a thought. |
