Haven't been around for a while, but here's a sketch I did today that I think (hope) will please my customer. All comments welcome.

This is a nicely nuanced study of midrange values, which aptly conveys the

By the way, I realize that just as a photograph of a subject can "clump" values, so can a photograph of a drawing, so it could well be that your drawing has even more subtle variation than we can see on the monitors. For example, it does appear that you've deliberately eased the edge of the face directly to the right of the eye, as I look at it again. If I look at it later on another computer, or after sunrise brightens up this room, it might look different again. So take all comments "in that light."

Thank you Steven, that was a very thoughtful, very analytical critique. I appreciate your taking the time to look closely at my sketch. I think your suggestions are all valid and will make positive subtle improvements to this little drawing. I especially think lightening or giving a little reflected light in the cheek area is a good idea.

Thanks much! :)

Christy, this is a lovely subject and a well thought out drawing. I am sure your clients will be quite pleased.

I do agree with Steven on all points mentioned but do add that consideration be taken/tested how much to lighten the outline of the entire face on the left side our right.

I am of the opinion that it could go as far as the paper in some areas. Or balance the right side with the left side. This is just food for thought.

All the best to you

I like that very much, Christy! A beautiful, sensitive drawing, and I really like your use of outline.

Gerber Baby is right. I like the drawing as well and agree witht Steven about the eye. What materials did you use?

Christy Talbott 10-07-2007 03:04 PM

Thank you Mischa, Thomasin and Enzie, it's nice to get your feedback. I made a few somewhat subtle adjustments and delivered it today. I'm grateful the parents are very happy with it!

Enzie, I used a #6 pencil, blender stick and a white eraser which i cut into sharp edges for things like crisp highlights and details in hair and such.

Hi Christy,

I think this is a completely fresh and charming piece, and personally I think that fussing with it might jeopardize that. (Well it would if it were my drawing, that is)

I particularly like the variety in the line quality you have used, and I feel that I see some of your porcess in the result.

Thank you, Chris, I'm honored that you like the little sketch.

I've admired you work for some time now and even have your excellent book on skin tones.
