Application of varnish
 

I have a painting that is about 1 year old that I would like to varnish. I would normally let it be but there are a few dark areas that have sunk in. How does one clean a picture before varnish? I read the post on cleaning before applying new paint to an old picture, is it the same?

Also, I plan to use some damar that I have had for some time (unopened) but having never varnished am unsure how to apply it.

After only a year, your painting should not be appreciably dirtier than when you painted it, unless it has been sitting horizontally with the surface face up for that year. My suggestion is to gently wipe the surface with a clean dry lint free cloth.

I have varnished paintings with both Damar and Gamvar. The real thing I have noticed with both of them is that they require the room, the varnish, and the painting to be fairly warm - around 80 degrees is best. If the surface of the painting is too cold, then the varnish will actually bead up.

I use a spare bathroom for this purpose. I put the painting and the closed bottle of varnish in the room with a space heater for about an hour before the varnishing event. That way, both room and painting come to the same warm temperature point. I use a brush to apply. The varnish will be touch dry in under two hours.

As to varnish types, I like Gamblin's Gamvar. It is a synthetic varnish, optically clear. I believe that over time it will not yellow like Damar does. Further, it is easier to remove than old Damar - you can use milder solvents.

Thanks Micheal. How about humidity? May in Florida may as well be August and currently every room in the house is about 75 degrees and not negotiable. I could use the garage, which is about 90+ but without AC it is humid.

I live in Colorado, so humidity is not an issue. But, I believe, and someone who might know better please chime in here, I don't think that ambient humidity will effect the application of the varnish, but it will make your drying time a little longer.

Thanks Michael, I will give it a shot. As you say, the worst that can happen is a longer drying time.
