Figure on Stage

This is oil on canvas, 20" x 24".

It is going to the Blackheath Gallery in London, UK (along with a few other works) in September.

Your work doesn't fit the mold. For that you are to congratulated. In a world where artists are busy copying each other, you really stand out.

Nice piece.

Thank-you very much, Jeff.

Thomasin,

I like how the face of the main figure has an almost tactile quality to it; the texture and the "material" of the skin is very much there and it gives the painting a very strong presence. The stare is very intriguing and I

Well,

One cannot simply say lovely or well done with one of your paintings. You actually have to look at them, which is what I did again before writing this. They seem carved out of a very luminous wall.

They really aren't like any one elses as Jeff has so correctly noticed, but quite compelling and your very own.

Hmm, I saw Balthus mentioned on your blog. He has a very 'beautiful' large standing nude at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Some of his work has a disturbing quality to it, which I cannot put a finger on.

Thank-you Carlos and Sharon. Carlos, I'll get the links for the drawings soon (must get back to painting). One of them is a landscape, or maybe both - I haven't decided yet - so I can't post them here. I appreciate you interest!

Balthus' work is quite like the looking glass world of Alice, without the childlike innocence (if it really is that innocent), perhaps.

These are the drawings Carlos, although I am still deciding which of the landscapes to send:

Thanks for taking the time to send the links, Thomasin. It

I love these, Thomasin! Your color use is so rich.

You say you're not sure which drawings to send? Can we vote? I vote for definitely including that tree done in red/sanguine. You can really feel the solidity of it (and I'm not a landscape fan).

Thomasin Dewhurst 08-19-2007 12:06 PM

Thank-you Julie. Yes, I am glad you voted. The tree is the one I like the best too, although the willowy black branches has a feeling of old English landscape art, so I thought since it was going to be exhibited in the UK ... Perhaps both, then.
