Phoebe monochrome

Here is another portrait of my husbands bosses other daughter (sister of Leanna) done with the wipe out method-- also created start to finish in five hours (must complete before the paint dries). Phoebe was hard to photograph because she kind of has a natural frown and here smiles look a little pained. This picture was the best, but I'm worried she seems a bit serious. These paintings are a surprise for his wife so I wasn't able to get sign-off on the photos from her before hand.

I've got to learn another painting method. These 5 hour wonders are exhausting. Also I always find things that need improvement the next day.

All comments and critiques are welcome.

This is lovely and Im sure her mother will be very pleased.

My thoughts would be that the ear needs work as it seems to not be going back far enough, seems a bit stuck on there? And perhaps look at the width of her nose.

Hello, this is a wonderful portrait and I truly mean that. Not shure of your choices of photos but to my eye this is a good choice. Mama will be so pleased.

I hope you will not mind that I have a few suggestions that in my humble opinion could shed some light. These suggestions can be considered even at this stage as you will see for they are about adding rather than subtracting. This is best explained on canvas so please excuse the scratches. 1 & 2 do not relate which makes the neckline stand out a bit. 3 & 4 can be toned down some even though it is considered a light reason being they stick out in relation to the solid form. Toning down the ear area where indicated will push it back and conform to the overall value of the form. 5 could be pushed in just a touch at same time considering the gesture line of the face. There mite be other value and sharpness or softness of line touches but I

April, First I must tell you I think both these portraits are lovely and I don't know how you manage to do them in one sitting! I've never tried the wipe-out method for the very reason that I'm sure I would look at it the next day and find some mistake that I couldn't correct.

That said, I think the critiques you have gotten are good. I also think the rounded part at the bottom of the nose on our right is slightly too light. In the photo, it is about the same value as the same side of the cheek in shadow. If you darken the shadow slightly around the base of the nose on the right side, you can correspondingly darken the nose. I also notice that you have made the mouth on our right curve up too much, but I am not sure you can fix it at this point.

Alex

These are all very good constructive comments. I will see what I can fix. Thank you for taking the time!

April hi

"Ok! Its looking good! " As my instructor would say. "Now lets have a look." I hated him at first but than I began to think and told my self, next time he comes around he wont find for me anything to correct. I learned so so much at the academy. Its always good to have a fresh eye have a look. So, please be patient.

The areas I have marked off still need to be looked at. 1 a tad sharp, 2 it looks like she has a lump or something, 3 smooth gentle skin, 4 lump and small form, 5 ear is to bright, even though the hair is pushing the ear forward it will look much better pushed back just a touch, 6 smoother transition and 7 just a tad to lumpy.

Wish you only the best
