"Lesser Apotheoun" wins at Woodmere.

In the pool of member announcements here, this one is relatively minor, but I thought I'd share it just the same.

The Woodmere Art Museum, a smal but growing institution serving a mission to focus upon the regional art legacy of the Delaware Valley, has just notified me that I'm the recipient of the John R. Maxwell Prize for oil painting, in their 66th Annual Juried Exhibition. While not the top prize, it's certainly a very good one, which I never expected. The show runs from January 29, to March 5, 2006.

The painting being honored is "Lesser Apotheoun", oil on poplar, 14.5 x 14 inches, 2005/2006. This is a small demonstration painting on a panel, and just a detail of "Apotheoun" (now spending time at the National Portrait Gallery, in Washington, D.C.). It has not been unveiled yet here, so I'll do that.

In case anyone is in the Philadelphia area on Saturday, the 28th of January, the opening reception is from 5 to 7 PM, with the awards ceremony at 6PM. Tours of the exhibition will be conducted by two well known regional painters, Paul DuSold, and Susan Moore, on Wed. Feb. 8 at 2PM, and Tues.Feb. 14 at 2PM, respectively. Also Docent tours take place Thursdays and Sundays at 2PM.

The Woodmere Art Museum is located at 9201 Germantown Avenue, in the Chestnut Hill section of Philadelphia.

Congrats Garth!
I've seen it and that's well deserved, I'd like to see that in person, but, Brazil is still pretty far from the Delaware Valley, maybe next time.

Garth, Congratulations, it's a well-deserved honor. What type of panel is it on?

Garth--congratulations! I will be at the Woodmere opening reception with Nancy Bea (we both have paintings in the show, too) so we will see you there and share in the celebration!

Dear Claudemir, and Richard,

Many thanks! Claudemir, I bet many on this Forum in the Northern Hemisphere wish they could join you enjoying the summer months! Richard, I got an 1 x 8 poplar board at Home Depot, and then buscuit joined it together to make it 14.5 inches. Soon I realized it needed cradling to keep it remaining reasonably flat. It's just a small bit of plywood that stablilizes it.

Dear Alex,

Yippie!!! Three friends from this Forum in one exhibition!!! That's great news I'm very happy about. Kudos to both you and Nancy Bea. We meet again!

Well, the Woodmere reception and awards presentation was last night, and it was very festive and lively. Garth was there with his daughter. Lesser Apotheoun looked wonderful hanging above another small piece (sorry I forgot to take a picture of it on the wall). Lots of people were remarking on how good the show was this year, and I agree that the quality of the pieces was really high. There was a lot of representational art this year!

Here's a picture of Garth with his daughter after he received his award:

Hi Linda, and Thanks!

This show, I am delighted to report, includes at least four of us related to the Portrait Artist Forum or Stroke of Genius: John Ennis, Nancy Bea Miller, Alexandra Tyng, and myself. It's a great show this year, and there are a number of others exhibiting who should be recruited to join here. At least I think so!

Thanks Alex for your kind report and great picture (and congratulations to you too!). I was all smiles last night. Last night was all schmoozing with good friends. Today we will attempt to actually see this show. :sunnysmil
