UGA Museum Gems
 
Hi -

If any of you are lucky enough to live within traveling distance of the University of Georgia (Athens), there is a visual treat waiting for you.

I couldn't believe it - standing in front of a gem of a watercolor (Flower for Teacher) by Winslow Homer, admiring a beautiful Robert Henri portrait of a little girl, looking at vigorous paintings by George Bellows.

They had some other nice exhibitions going on too, but these made my day!

American painting is the focus of the Georgia Museum of Art's collection. A passionate collector, Alfred Heber Holbrook, the museum's founder, combined sound judgment in acquisition with sensitivity to a continuum of art historical periods and artistic styles. Nineteenth-century works include those by Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Eakins, Winslow Homer, George Inness, Elizabeth Jane Gardner, and James McNeill Whistler. The collection is especially strong in early twentieth-century paintings with important works by, among others, Stuart Davis, Reginald Marsh, Georgia O
