My daughter
 

I have allowed this painting to sit around for two months now, wondering if I should keep working on it, but my instincts say 'leave it alone'. This oil painting is 18" x 14" on stretched canvas. I actually want to show you two pictures under different lighting conditions...I prefer the dimmer lighting conditions to hide the flaws ;) , no really, the medium light makes the painting come to life.

Sometimes it is said, it is difficult for an artist to combine a career and family, but when it produces juicy little models like this it is a boon.

I had the same experience with a landscape painting from Spain that I did recently. It was painted from a watercolor made on location. To get a solid value range I under-painted in grisaille and filled in the colors afterward. When I saw that painting in a dim light it was even stronger.

That is the case with your charming painting of your lovely daughter. You simply got a perfect range of values.

Thanks everyone. This little one is quite the character...she always makes us laugh. I would have painted her laughing if I could, but 200 photographs later, I resigned to this backup pose. Allan, isn't it amazing how different a painting can look with different lighting sources! I constantly carry my WIP around the house to check it under different lighting.
