Everlasting love
 

Early Friday evening my mom, the lovely Darla Eugene Vearrier, lost her fight with lung cancer.

We will miss her so so much.

Darla sent me to art school at the age of like 7. To private instruction by 10 and helped me set up this wonderfull studio room in my little house.

She was a seeker of truth. She studied, with me, all religions and found the one true thing. WE are all one love expressing itself, to know itself. The greatest expression of the grandest vision of love/life.

I'm so sorry you've lost your mom. I haven't had that happen yet, and I can only imagine that it is so bittersweet to feel the gratitude to have had such a precious person in your life, the sadness to not be able to share time with them again on this earth, and yet they are still with you all the time and will live on through you.

Dear Members,

Thank you all for your kind words and prayers. John Edwards says prayers for the dead are presented as flowers. I'll hold that image. We are comforted by the sweet memories of the woman we knew and loved. Part of the theme music I've chosen for the memorial is Al Jolson's "Smile" It says so much about who Darla was. When the time is right, I'll be asking for guidance to re-paint the HS grad pic I did in 2001. Thanks to you all, I think this next expression will go much better!

The time is right
 

The first portrait I did, was a copy of my mothers HS grad pic. It was crap.

Looked like an alien!! But It gave me a chance to see how much I liked portrait work, and helped me to define my "style" if you will.

Anyway, I've started it again. I'd like some feed back.... As always, after I look at something for a few days, I can no longer see the defects, my eye fills in what is not there.......

I assume that the reference of your mother would be a black and white?
Since the composition is given the next thing to do should be a color and value scheme so that you get a clear definition of the lighting.
Your present values are too close and make a flat impression of the figure.
You would be interested in emphasizing the skin color, but right now I think that the hair is the most prominent element of the head. What do you think?
To turn this balance around you could darken the background. See what that would do?
Make some small sketches with different colors and values. Preferably 3-4 values.
