Barbara M. in St. Vincent

I really wanted to spend more time painting the locals during our recent sail around the Windward Islands. Perhaps I will from photo studies. Barbara was an easier live subject since she was on our yacht reading for an hour or so with no knowledge of being painted. I consider this a little watercolor a study approximately 5" x 3."

Seven other seascapes done on location will be posted to the watercolor page of my website if you care to visit. Watercolors

Hi Jeanine,

It looks like you had a lot of fun! Every morning I pass an older gentleman who sits in his front yard reading the newspaper with his equally old Irish Setter sprawled out next to him. (Actually, I have noticed that since the war has started more older folks seem to camp out on their front lawns reading the paper.) I keep pondering how to go about sketching him, without him noticing me. If he knows I am there, I don

Thank you Enzie and Sharon!

I began a seascape from our bareboat charter that was anchored in a charming cove in St. Vincent called Petit Byahaut. As the wind shifts so does the boat, so I had to continually wait for my "scene" to come back into view. That's when I spotted my subject reading on the stern pulpit. I knew she had settled in for a while. So I began a second painting without a word to her and voila'!

Whenever she looked up, I would look at my work or the scene to her right so as not to arouse suspicion.

My advice is to get out and start a landscape that includes the setting where your subject often comes. They will get used to you being there. Then add them in.

ps. Barbara M. purchased this and three other paintings from that trip!

Hi Jeanine,

This is loose, fresh and fun, outdoor painting as it should be. What a non-pressured situation, too - no anxiety about "tightness" or "getting it to look just like the photo." Thanks for posting this and congratulations on the sale!

Best regards,
Linda
