Framing
 

How do you handle the framing of a portrait? I have been framing them for my customers but the frame companies can be slow and unreliable. The customers love the portrait and then really lament the choice of a frame. Do many of you deliver them unframed and then recommend a good framer? I do not know what the typical procedure is.

Hi again! I got together with a reputable framer nearby who offers my clients a 15% discount. After approval of the portrait, we meet at the shop and I help them choose a suitable frame. This applies to clients who have their own framer as well.

I put my paintings in a frame that I really like and include this in my fee. So far, I haven't had any problems with this and consider it part of my "art". On my website, I try to show framed pictures: www.portraitartist.com/wells

I tend to buy inexpensive frames and put the painting in the frame as I finish it. Also, I use the oil colors from my palette to rub into the frame so it is completely compatible with the painting.

I love the idea of 'gilding' the frame with the same colors in the painting. Why didn't I think of that?

If you don't mind my asking, where do you get your frames? They look remarkably good for being 'inexpensive' frames.

Framing and matting supplies can be expensive when you add the cost of shipping them to you. If you can, seek out a more local framing supply business. Who do your local framing shops buy from? Ask around and you will likely find someone local to buy from.
