Just thought I'd post a foal pastel. Comments? Thanks Tammy

Lovely form and color. I can see that you know and love horses!

Thanks, Michele

I do have the struggle between working with the horses and painting. I have to paint first and train second. I always have the strength to ride but painting has to be done while I'm fresh.

Hi Tammy!

What a beautiful horse! I also like the eggshaped purple frame in the background. Did you mask it and rub the darker purple around it with pastel or is it sprayed? I have done it with pastel a couple of times with a heartshape when doing greeting cards for wedding gifts.

Thanks, Hanna, for the nice words. The oval was a mistake. I did this just as practice (trying to do one piece with pastels each day) and I did it on construction paper. It was right after there had been a discussion about colorfastness of pastels and papers, etc.. Well, I matted this in an oval mat and took it to a horse show where it sat in the direct sun for 4 hours, the pastels were colorfast (Unison) the paper however was not. But the effect is kind of nice. How did you do your heart shape?

I cut out a big heart and then I put it on the paper I was going to use for the greeting-card. Then I just painted around the heart and blended the pastel while firmly holding the heart still. When I blended I went along the edge of the heart so no pastel would go under it. I also cut out a small heart in the big heart and used that on the front side of the card. There I made two hearts in different angles and slightly overlapping. In one of the cards I wrote a vers in the big heart inside and in the other one a draw a portrait of the bride and groom? Both of hte cards turned out great, and it is so much more fun to do things yourself than to buy them at a store.
