Self-portrait

A selfie, in the current vernacular (oil 12x9"). Usually when I do a portrait, self or otherwise, I try to make it a process of discovery, consciously avoiding any preconception of what I want to convey and allowing the character of the subject to reveal itself to me. Almost always when I do a "selfie," in the end result I seem to be scowling, or somehow angry, which is not what I was experiencing. In this one I made an effort to lighten the mood, hoping it wouldn't lapse over into self-consciousness. I'm not entirely convinced and still have some tinkering to do.
