Oh, Carlos, I LOVE these drawings! They are all that drawings should be: expressive, lively, accurate. You know when to stop before the life goes out of a drawing. These are full of life!

David Draime 01-31-2008 11:35 AM

Carlos,

These are truly brilliant. Like Alex said, they are so full of life. I stand in awe and admiration - and a little jealousy - before this great work. You are one my absolute favorite artists on this Forum.

Carlos,
it's great drawings.

I like how you weight the value tones over the linedrawing, it gives a painterly quality and emphasizes the beautiful color of the sanguine.

Tremendous work, Carlos. So fresh, and such an intelligent placement of the figure on the paper with the lovely white space - almost as thought the figure and the space were conversing. There's a drawing competition coming up by North Light books and advertised in last month's Artist's Magazine which I think you should enter these into. It seems a great opportunity. It is the second edition of the book Strokes of Genius on the back cover of which a drawing of Chris Saper's was displayed. I will post the actual details in the appropriate section later on today when I have some more time. The deadline, I think, is the end of March' 08.

Yummy work, Carlos!

Carlos,

These are beautiful portraits. I wish I could get this much done in 50 minutes. ;)

Great job.

Sharon, Alex, David, Allan, Thomasin, Richard, and Dan....
Thank you, all, for taking time to view and comment. And all of these from artists of such high caliber, makes me appreciate them even more. What a generous comment, David...I

Carlos, I think this is the first time I see your drawings (I might have missed them if you posted some before), they are just so immediate ! And you stopped exactly at the right moment too, without overworking but really telling us all we needed to know.
I also like the placement of the head very much in both works and the balance between lines and modelling, very beautiful

Great drawings, Carlos !
very expressive : I can almost hear him chatting !

Enzie Shahmiri 02-01-2008 06:18 PM

These drawings are beautiful Carlos! I love that you did them from different angles as well.

Carlos Ygoa 02-02-2008 06:28 AM

Thanks Ilaria, Marina and Enzie. More artists I admire greatly. Your words are very uplifting and encouraging.

Carlos,
What a treat! These are wonderful to view and then to study. You said these were done in sanguine. Was it conte crayon or pencil? I guess I want to know how much of a sharp edge you worked with.

Thank you, Carlos. I also would love to know what kind of paper you used. I would like to try sanguine.
Thanks for the compliment!

Patricia,
The first drawing was on ordinary charcoal sketchpad paper (off white, a local brand, very common here) and the second was on W&N Medium surface Cartridge.
I wish I could try other papers...I guess it

Beautiful and sensitive drawings, I love your use of the medium and the composition. Very lively, his character comes across!

Heidi Maiers 03-16-2008 01:16 PM

This is wonderful how you've captured him in the process of chatting. Hard to do from life. Excellent work.

Carlos Ygoa 03-16-2008 06:30 PM

Thank you Margaret and Heidi for looking and for your comments.
Margaret-- I admire the sensitivity you show yourself in your works, so your comment means a great deal.
Heidi--actually, if the person just doesn

Carlos,

I don't know how I missed this thread - these drawings are strong, powerful and beautifully articulated. What paper or ground did you use?

Enzie Shahmiri 03-29-2008 10:15 PM

Carlos, I love that these have such an airy feel about them. Quiet a challenge to draw someone who is constantly talking.

Carlos Ygoa 03-30-2008 09:24 AM

Thank you for your comment and interest, Chris. I used an ordinary sketch pad paper apt for charcoal in the first one (off white) and in the second one it was a W&N medium surface cartridge, also very common but more brilliant in its whiteness.

Thank you also Enzie. Like I said earlier, it is far easier for me to just try and draw someone who is chatting than to tell that person to please stop talking. I have to be very comfortable with someone to request that they stop talking.
