Here is my recent addition to my paintings of my grandchildren. This is Quinnlan. She is 5 years old but the reference photo was taken when she was 3.
The canvas is stretched linen and measures 24" x 32". It is oil on canvas. Any compliments belong to my beautiful model. |
John, grate job! She is quite lovely and I bet she has a wonderful personality at least I sense this in your rendition of her. I also like the way you have balanced the values over all and the girl takes center stage as it should be. A excellent painting for your portfolio.

Nice work, John. Can you post a face closeup?

Thank you, Mischa, Michele and Chris,
Yes, Mischa, Quinee does have quite the personality. Just last weekend she had a dance recital where she spent the entire second half of her routine spying into the audience and waving to everybody. She knows no strangers. Michele, I'm happy to post a close up. I hope it comes out as well. I'm on a different computer and am not sure if it will affect the color or not. And, thank you, Chris. I'm glad you like it. It seems to be a bit more of a growth process as I am trying to incoporate more of a natural feel than a photographic feel which is difficult for a resource photo reference. I'm trying to rely on what I learn in life painting sessions. |
I like this, too, John - good work!
|
I agree -- this is your best work yet.

John!
Fabulous! This can easily be regarded as a finest work as we all are echoing. What a lovely composition and countenance! Keep a series going of your grandchildren! Garth |
Very dynamic use of the canvas! I love the shapes of the negative spaces around her form.
|
Very nice painting. I really like her eyes - so expressive and well-drawn.

Thank you Linda, Michele, Garth, Alex and Thomasin,
I have one more grandaughter who is asking now for me to paint her. I mentioned the dance recital last weekend, my youngest granddaughter participated as well. At intermission the girls were brought on stage and asked to tell their name, age and what they wanted to be when they grow up. Keeley (my youngest) gave her name, age and proclaimed she wanted to be a painter when she grows up. I was very moved. Keeley has such a great face and so expressive when she is acting normal. Its not easy getting that look when you break out the camera. The reference material will be the challenge. I appreciate the compliments and the encouraging words. They are like manna that falls from the heavens above. |
John,
I want to join the others and say great job on a very charming portrait. I love that it is natural-- her hair isn't quite perfect or her posture, but all the more charming because of those things! Love the flower too. :) Christy |
