Jimmie, this is such a wonderful and compelling portrait. There can be no doubt about you deserving this award. Despite the stiff competition, in my humble opinion, your portrait of Kathryn is by far the best!

Will you award winners be on view in any exhibition? I'd love to see it. Ardith's pastel is so very deserving too. My good friend Christopher Smith deservedly got that third place sculpture prize too, I can't wait to congratulate him. I think the jurors picked the best works.

Jimmie I am really looking forward to meeting you! Thanks Terri, for this thread.

Garth

Garth

Amen to that!!! Wow, what a gorgeous rendering - absolutely stunning. Way to go!!!

Patricia Joyce 03-26-2005 07:01 PM

Jimmie,
It was of only a matter of time!! And I am not suprised at all. You are on your way to more recognition. I am Proud to know you.

Oh yeah, the portrait is GEORGIOUS too :thumbside :thumbside :thumbside

Jimmie Arroyo 03-26-2005 08:41 PM

Thanks so much guys!!!

I heard the good news couple of weeks back, but was kinda embarassed to mention it. Felt bad for Beth cuz she wanted to pop the news but I asked her to wait. Now that I'm here, I can show off then and say I also got finalist for 'angelina'.

What was real cool was that the same week I won a Winsor Newton award for 'ling' at the Ridgewood Art Center in Jersey. I think I might also be in the second "How Did You Paint That" from International Artist Magazine that came out this week.

Before anyone thinks my head might grow, I'm really starting to hate the shirt on my recent pastel, so that'll keep me grounded. :)

I don't think my drawing was one of the best technically, but I think it was one of the only that made eye contact so it must have been the emotion thing. Either way, the money will help pay some bills. ;C

Thanks again everyone and to Terri for starting it.

Michele Rushworth 03-26-2005 09:00 PM

Fantastic and well deserved, Jimmie!

Mike McCarty 03-26-2005 09:02 PM

Congratulations Jimmie, well deserved.

John Zeissig 03-26-2005 09:44 PM

This is terrific news , Jimmie! If it were up to me, you'd have won first place by a comfortable margin. Your work really has a "Voice". (That's the part that nobody can teach you.)

John

Kimberly Dow 03-26-2005 10:56 PM

Jimmie - Is that an International Artist How did You Paint That - book? Or one of their magazine articles?

Jimmie Arroyo 03-27-2005 11:48 AM

Thanks Michele, Mike and John.

Yeah, the book. I did all the paper work involved and submitted it to them, but my name does'nt show on the website as an author. I contacted the editor and she said it is included, the website is a mistake. Just to try to put my mind at ease, I counted the names listed, but they already have 100, which makes me think I was'nt included. I'll have to wait and see.

Allan Rahbek 03-27-2005 12:33 PM

Congratulations Jimmie,

it had to happen

Seem Jimmie we must have been connected at the hip at one point in the universe - not because of talent "I'm not worthy"! - but because, I too am Charlie Brown!

You'll get your recognition! We'll be spreading the word anyway! ;)

Jimmie - I have a landscape in their How Did You...Flowers & Gardens. They had the book advertised on the website for a long time with a list of authors - but the authors were from a previous book - so I was confused also. Just an unclear system maybe. Don't fret - if the editor says you are there then you are I'm sure.

John, I really like the way you've said this, thanks for posting your comment.

And Jimmie, I vote for letting your head swell as big as it can get! I think you should be dancing in the street!

Jean Kelly 03-28-2005 01:11 AM

Jimmie,

Triple congratulations! I think we all knew it was just a matter of time. Your work has such sensuality and humaness, I don't think anyone can resist it!

Jean

Jimmie Arroyo 03-28-2005 09:56 AM

Thanks for the new comments.

Wow, that's funny. I've always seen myself as Charlie Brown. I don't know that out of all the Charlie Browns in the world, I'm the Charlie Browniest, but it might be close.

As it turns out, my name is now listed on the website as an author for International Artist. It'll look cool on my resume.

My wife thinks the same way. It bothered her that I was'nt excited to win second place. It bothered her more when I told her that I'm going to use the $1000 to pay bills. I don't know why it does'nt excite me, maybe it does'nt sink in.

I get plenty excited finding a crisp, clean dollar in my pocket that I did'nt know was there.

Thanks again.

Garth Herrick 03-28-2005 11:28 PM

Too bad there's no brick-and-mortar show!

Jimmie,

The high resolution image of "Kathryn" is stunning! But I would love to see this masterpiece in person. There ought to be an actual show of the ARC winners and finalists that we can all attend and view!

Tonight, I just visited my good friend Christoper Smith who deservedly got the third place prize in sculpture. He was having an open studio drawing session at his studio, which I participated in for the first time. Over in the corner next to some gray photography backdrop paper was his winning piece, "Tidal Rhythms". Chris said humorously that this is his part of that brick and mortar show I wished to see. Truly worth the visit!

So Jimmie, I want to drive out and see your drawing of "Kathryn" as well. I want to hang out with you up and coming "Living Masters"! Can I make an appointment?

Garth

Marcus Lim 03-29-2005 12:10 AM

Congrats Jim-bo!

I want to make an appointment too! But good god, it'll have to take at least 14-15hrs flight to your location from Singapore! But it's definitely worth to see "Kathryn" in real-time! I'm really happy with your new achievements, Jimmie! :)

Quite funny (I like the word 'funny') you mentioned that, because I think the high res pic on the site is way off. ARC sent an e-mail asking if any changes were needed before they print it in their catalog. I immediately sent them better versions of 'kathryn' and 'angelina'. The color, contrast, and sharpness are off.

You give me more kudos than I deserve. No need for the drive to Jersey, I'll bring it with me to Philly along with others that I think look ok. Sorry Marcus, Singapore might be tough! :o

The 'brick and mortar' show will be out of the trunk of my car. The opening reception will be April 10th near Garth's place in Philly, no food or drinks will be served, please bring your own. As silly as it sounds, that would be kinda cool if a bunch of us got together and put on a 'trunk' show. The 'back seats' would be for works in progress.

Thanks again Garth and Marcus.

Sharon Knettell 03-29-2005 10:08 AM

Thump! Thump! Thump!

Jimmie,

That's just me jumping for joy for your well deserved award.

I cannot imagine what you could do if you actually got some sleep!

Jimmie Arroyo 03-29-2005 10:17 AM

Hey, thank you Sharon!

How wierd, I just sent you a PM because I had'nt heard from you in a while. Spooky.

That would be horrible! If I ever got sleep, I would'nt be able to do anything. :o

Denise Hall 03-30-2005 11:32 PM

Jimmie,

I saw your winning drawing as I perused ARC the other night when I accidentally "found" the section on the winners! I was totally surprised and so happy for you! I can't think of a person who deserves this more than you. Talent abounds!!

Congratulations to you guy!

Denise

Jimmie Arroyo 03-30-2005 11:35 PM

Thanks Denise, it's always great to hear from you!!!

Rob Sullivan 03-31-2005 11:54 AM

So this is what happens when I'm offline for a couple of weeks! If that's the case, I'll break my computer for Jimmie's sake!

Can I say that I'm not surprised? I'm just glad you entered the competition. If you had told us that you'd done so, I would have immediately asked what you were going to do with the prize money. (And, by the way, I'm using the proceeds of a recent sale to pay my taxes. Taking care of the practical things helps an artist more than an impulse purchase or hedonistic binge.)

My heartiest and most sincere congratulations, Jimmie. Spread the word. That's not bragging - it's business.

[Hey, Arcadia Gallery... are you listening???]

Ngaire Winwood 03-31-2005 06:31 PM

Wow, Jummy those late nighters that you pull have paid off in a great way.

Your drawing is not only inspiring but you have managed to bring a unique quality to the fore and you have raised the bar to all draughtsmanship lovers, students and admirers. You also have managed to show the beauty of the pencil. Well Done!

Michele Rushworth 03-31-2005 07:25 PM

So true, Rob!

Jimmie Arroyo 03-31-2005 09:36 PM

You guys are too good to me.

It'll be nice to win some more competitions with big 'cash' prizes. i won a watercolor set in Jersey, but I have no intentions on using them. They're kinda expensive, so I may hold them until my daughter gets older, if she decides to take art seriously. Maybe I could just sell them.

Anyway, the late nights are taking their toll also. I'm always tired now, but if I don't work at night, I'll never get anything done. I wonder how much the MegaMillions is this week?

I gotta practice the bragging (business) thing. My wife tells me all the time that I have a problem with self-confidence. ;C

Thanks again.

Michele Rushworth 03-31-2005 10:01 PM

Peggy Baumgaertner's advice in this area is excellent: "Fake It 'Til You Make It!" Meaning, when you have an opportunity to talk to people about your work, fake some confidence and one day you'll wake up and really have it!

Alicia Kornick 04-01-2005 09:33 PM

Congratulations Jimmie!!
I can hear your prices going up from down here.

Thanks Alicia, the noises you hear are not my prices, it's my head banging against the wall. :o

kathryn in person

Jimmie visited me yesterday and shared his pristine original kathryn for me to see. While this looks absolutely stunning online, I must say I was disapointed. It's just that it was such a shame Jimmie would not let me keep her to shine down from my studio walls! If there was ever an argument to support seeing original art in galleries and museums, kathryn is a great example. She is worth every one of the hundred thousand pennies she was awarded! And more! There is nothing better than viewing the original. I consider myself very fortunate despite my disapointment.

Jimmie, it was great to meet you! You and kathryn can visit anytime.

Garth

Jeff Fuchs 04-12-2005 05:01 PM

Congratulations!!!

I've been away from the art scene for a while, since I'm back to the restoration work on my old house.

But this morning I happened to go to the Art Renewal site, and browsed the salon winners. My heart nearly stopped when I saw your piece.

I couldn't help thinking "that sure raises the value of my art collection". (juuust kidding)

I'll bet those galleries are begging for your work now!

BTW: Garth, I get to see one of Jimmie's originals several times a day. It's hanging in my bedroom.

Patricia Joyce 04-12-2005 05:27 PM

Hi Jeff,
Carve out some time for drawing. I miss your input on this forum!!
