Scott Bartner, Artist's Magazine, Jan 2005

Dear Scott,

I just received my new Artist's Magazine, and what a fabulous article on you and your work, "From Darkness to Life".

An extremely well-deserved recognition! Congratulations!

Linda Brandon 12-02-2004 12:28 AM

Scott, this is a terrific article! It's very informative about your technique and I'm happy that your wry humor is peppered throughout the pages. Your beautiful paintings reproduced very well.

I'm so glad that you're getting all this attention. Is The Artist's Magazine available in Holland?

Scott Bartner 12-02-2004 07:38 AM

Thank you Chris and Linda:

It was great working with TAM--very nice people. Writing about one's work is almost as rewarding/frustrating as painting itself. Chris, I almost had Alexandra in the article had I been well enough to take photos and mail them. They're saying now I might have had Legionnaire's--go figure; I can't even march without tripping.

Linda, I probably won't see the article for another several weeks owing to the Atlantic and holiday mail, so drop your brushes and scan it for me--or no dropjes for Christmas!

Sharon Knettell 12-02-2004 09:02 AM

Scott,

I have not seen the article, but I have seen your wonderful work. Congratulations!

Jimmie Arroyo 12-02-2004 09:40 AM

Congratulations Scott,

I just picked it up this morning at the post office, but have'nt read it. I recongnized the work immediately, "hey, I know this guy!".

Julie Deane 12-02-2004 12:19 PM

Congratulations

It's a great article, Scott, and your artwork shines. Great writing, too! (I wonder how many artists are also good writers?)

Janel Maples 12-02-2004 06:48 PM

Congratulations Scott!

I ditto all of the above. It was such a treat for me to pick up the magazine and recognize your name. Participating in this forum makes me feel like I know you. I already knew before the article that you were really good, so.....that makes me feel good about me. (One of my favorite lines from one of my favorite movies "As good as it gets")

Way to go!!

Elizabeth Schott 12-03-2004 12:40 AM

Congratulations Scott! I'll have to go steal my friend Gina's copy!

Cynthia Daniel 12-03-2004 12:46 AM

Congratulations, Scott! I'm thrilled for you!

Scott Bartner 12-03-2004 04:31 AM

Thank you all very much.

Jimmie, when I read your post quickly this morning I saw the words "post office" and "Hey, I know this guy." My heart started pounding with images of those "Wanted" posters and wondered: what have I done now?!

Linda, thank you for dedicating your afternoon to scanning and sending the article to me, when you could have been painting knights and bishops. Ten kilos of dropjes are on the way.

I paint queens, rooks and pawns, too.

I wish I knew what dropjes were, but... ten kilos. And all it took was scanning a few pages...? Need anything else scanned, Scott?

I also wanted to add that an Aussie friend brought me a bag of Darrell Lea Soft Licorice over the weekend. I see I've just eaten 500g of a product containing "treacle", just what is that, really?
I think dropjes is a byproduct of treacle.

Geary Wootten 12-03-2004 04:54 PM

Big Dittos to what all else have said....plus, wanted to say that looking at your website and instruction on here....really has helped me in the style of the old masters. I haven't done that many, but, sure do love to get in there and "grisaille" away! :)

All best,
Geary

Ngaire Winwood 12-03-2004 10:14 PM

Wow Scott congratulations from Down Under!

I haven't got a copy but I am sure it would be a wonderful representation of your painting skills and be a tribute to your special persona.

Thank you for all of your sharing and generosity on this forum. Well Done!

I also hope that this publicity will generate an never ending painting income for you.

Scott Bartner 12-04-2004 05:53 PM

Thank you Geary and Ngaire.

Mike, I believe these Dutch "dropjes" once had a medicinal purpose, and they are an acquired taste being more salty than sweet, like swallowing sea water after being knock down by a rogue wave, which is why I decided to send LTB chocolates instead.

One day I hope to be surprised by a delivery man carrying a ping pong table-size piece of ABS with an attached card reading: "Greetings from sunny Arizona."

Leslie Ficcaglia 12-05-2004 09:34 AM

Scott, let me add my congratulations to the others'. The Portrait of Jennifer Laoang is just magnificent; the subtle colors and your rendering of her features are exquisite. Can't wait to hear your reaction when you actually see the article!

Mike McCarty 12-05-2004 10:39 AM

Scott,

Here's hoping you have a speedy recovery and congrats regarding the well deserved recognition.

Ilaria Rosselli Del Turco 12-05-2004 05:33 PM

Scott,

Sorry I won't be able to read this article, but whatever it says I am sure is fully deserved.

The portrait of the boy is set aside for a while, but I definetely decided to work on it my way rather than yours (just too difficult)!

Many many congratulations, thanks for stopping by at my "show", it's gone really well - I am supersatisfied.

Ilaria

Scott Bartner 12-06-2004 04:33 AM

Thank you Leslie. It might be a while before I see the magazine. They sent the copies I had ordered to my parent's address, and my father is already grumbling about the postage to forward them here.

Thanks Mike, I'm fully recovered waiting for the next virus. Couldn't someone like Norton invent a firewall for people?

Ilaria, I enjoyed your 2004 work and even learned a little Italian reading the guest book. I hope it brings you many new commissions.

Marvin Mattelson 12-06-2004 08:19 PM

Hi Scott,

I picked up my issue today. It looks great and is a terrific resource for those interested in learning your method. Well done and kudos to you!

One question. Did you give them transparencies to work from or send them digital files?

Chris Saper 12-06-2004 08:54 PM

WHAT! Linda's getting chocolates!? Can I have one when they arrive?

Linda Brandon 12-07-2004 01:03 AM

Absolutely not, Chris. You know I only do this Forum thing for the food benefits. Besides, it looks like I have just been cajoled into sending Scott a giant ABS panel.
:)

Scott Bartner 12-07-2004 04:38 AM

Thanks Marvin.

Apparently TAM only works with slides although I sent them digital files which I don't think they used. As you may have noticed, Janine Jansen now bows with her left hand--amazing violinist!

Linda, far be it from me to suggest you share your chocolates with Chris. However, the minimum weight they would ship was 500 grams, that's 1/2 kilo, and I'm quite certain if you proceeded to eat them all in one sitting, you'd be painting like Willem de Kooning with his finger in a Christmas tree light socket.

Timothy C. Tyler 02-20-2005 11:52 AM

International

Scott, I think this really is something because I don't recall many articles form outside the states. Maybe this is their first attempt at going after "International Artists" market? Congrats, Tim
