Higher thoughts and prayer request.

My dear friend and often participant of this forum - Carl Toboika, is just beginning a journey with cancer.

He will know soon if he can have the operation needed to help in his healing, if he is operable he will have a 60% chance of the cancer never returning. On the 12th of this month he will also have further test to see if it has spread beyond the current area, he will receive those results on the 20th.

Carl is one of the nicest people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Not only is he a very talent artist, he is extremely generous with his time, and has a sense of humor that can rock the world. He also loves adventure and is so dedicated to his family.

Please keep him in your thoughts, prayers or whatever it is you do.

Prayers to you Charlie, your loving Bessie!

Elizabeth,

Our prayers from here too. Yes, he is very talented, very skilled self-portrait of his, I think Carl posted it last year some time? Thanks for posting it again.

I'm devastated by this news. Carl is an outstanding person blessed with tremendous talent and great humanity. The world is a far better place because of his presence. Getting to know him personally has been a true blessing for me. I pray for his speedy and full recovery.

Denise Hall 05-09-2004 02:05 PM

All of us who have had the pleasure of an extended critique from Carl (I must say handholding on my part) knows what a kind and most generous person he is.

We are with you Carl, in thoughts and prayers and as tough as you are - you will have the great spirit to stand up to this large challenge. I pray that you have great doctors and support staff to lean on through your treatment - and you know the portrait community will be behind you. Through the miles and cyber waves - I am thinking of you each day.

Denise

Carl, I hope with all my heart that you get good news. It's got to be hard to think about anything else.

Michele Rushworth 05-09-2004 11:58 PM

Having met Carl last year and having exchanged many an email with him, I was shocked and deeply saddened by this news. Carl, hang in there and fight.... Is there anything we can do?

Linda Brandon 05-10-2004 12:40 AM

I have a big email folder full of advice, hints, ideas and what can only be called general all-around brilliance from Carl. He is an extraordinarily generous, kind, funny, imaginative and gifted artist.

Carl, I hope you know how many people care about you and sincerely hope all goes well for you in the weeks and months to come. All love and prayers going out to you, my friend.

Garth Herrick 05-10-2004 12:50 AM

Hang in there Carl! My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Prayers for strength

Carl,

My prayers are with you. My strength and faith is with you. That wall we are perched on...., with Hope on one side and Fear on the other, holds us above both. Be Still, and I'll sit here with you, focused completely on your recovery, thanking God for it as we speak.

Your friend,

ReNae

Having studied with Carl at Bill Whitakers Scottsdale workshop last May, I couldn't thank Carl enough for "taking me under his wing" that week. He has been a constant source of help to me in my painting development over the last year, and his skill and generosity in helping other artists is well known. He is a true gentleman.

If there is anyone who can beat this, it's Carl. You are in my thoughts.

Your friend, Patrick.

Terri Ficenec 05-11-2004 10:31 PM

Our thoughts and prayers are with you too, Carl.
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

Terri and David

Janel Maples 05-12-2004 01:19 PM

Carl,

You probably do not remember this, but back when I was still a lurker (Cynthia's term for those of us who read a lot but did not participate in the forum) I sent you a personal email telling you how much I liked your self-portrait. I added that I hope to be able to paint that well someday.

You took the time for a complete stranger and kindly responded with words of encouragement.

I shall take the time to keep you in my daily thoughts hoping for a complete and speedy recovery for you.

Be strong.

Sincerely,

Janel Maples

Dear Friends,
Thank you so very much for all your caring support! It is such a good feeling to know that many are behind me in my fight. It makes it easier to avoid being overwhelmed and set my determination in even more strongly to do my utmost in getting better.

Carl,

It has long been a goal of mine to be included on your hard drive.

Having a daughter myself I know what it must mean to you to have her returning.

All the best to you and your family.

Hi Carl,
My first prayers for you have already been answered with your good news for surgery, and the chance of a complete recovery and cure. Every time I visit portraitartist.com (believe me that is many times a day!) you come to mind, and I say a prayer....

You are in Good Hands!! And with the people you love. I pray all goes well
God Bless,
Pat

Elizabeth Schott 05-21-2004 11:55 AM

Carl I am looking at this as GOOD news! Just put on your miners hat, grab the flashlight and magnifier and go with your incredible attitude and patient persistence, and things will be GOOD!

I am glad your daughter is coming home (wow to leave SF), you know I have a daughter I could send you too! You know which one. :)

Michele Rushworth 05-21-2004 12:56 PM

Carl, I'm so relieved. I was thinking about you yesterday, as I remembered that was the date when you were going to find out whether you could have surgery or not. I'll await news on how that goes and keep all my fingers crossed.

Lynn T. McCallum 05-21-2004 01:55 PM

Dear Carl, there are a lot of folks in Georgia that you don't even know thinking of you and praying for you!

Thank you for the update.

I hope to meet you in person some day soon, till then and until you are up to the e-mails again, remember that I too am praying for your family, and your health.

Southern love to you,
Lynn

Carl Toboika 05-27-2004 06:21 PM

Hi Carl,
I just want to tell you that my wife recently went through an operation because of cancer. She is fine now. The cancer was detected at an early state , and she need no further treatment, so far.
Science is very advanced and all the best knowledge is available at all hospitals.
We think of you and hope the best.
You still have a lot of paints to do.
Allan

Valerie Gudorf 07-17-2004 02:09 AM

Carl, I certainly hope you'll have good news to share when we next hear from you. Until then, please know that my thoughts and prayers have been added to the list of those already praying and believing for your full recovery. If there's anything you need, please don't hesitate to ask. We are here for you.

Elizabeth Schott 07-21-2004 01:02 PM

I received another note from Carl, asking me to share. It sounds like he is doing well but is exhausted.

Quote:

I have not the energy or time to post on SOG myself today, so would you do me a favor and post there, that I made it through the operation successfully and*I'm on the mend.*I will know in a few months whether the operation was a complete cure, or if radiation will be necessary in addition. However things are looking up, and I deeply, deeply*thank everyone for their prayers.
*
Sad thing is his computer is up a flight a steps, so this limits his on line time - well just about makes it zero.

I would like to double thank you all for your kindness.

:) Beth

Geri Comicz 07-21-2004 04:01 PM

My prayers will continue for a speedy recovery, Carl.

Magdalena Castaneda 07-22-2004 06:16 PM

Thank you

Carl,

My friend has been recovering from cancer, and is doing very well. She sends you her regards.
We both continue to have you in our hearts, and are very glad to hear that you've had good results from the surgery.
I await your return to this forum board as soon as your energy permits, have missed your posts. And as another member just mentioned, you have paintings to paint!

Elizabeth,

Thank you for letting us know about Carl and where his computer is located. We all know that energy is everything when recovering from surgery. All the Best.

With much affection, Magdalena
