I don't know when the competition was, but I just now happened to go to the Portrait Society of Canada's web site and saw that Juan Martinez won Grand Prize! Congratulations, Juan!

Elizabeth Schott 10-07-2003 12:06 AM

Juan, this is just bursting with life and character. Heartfelt contratulations to you!

I forgot to ask... can we get a close-up of his face?

Juan Martinez 10-07-2003 10:09 AM

Thanks Cynthia, Tim, Elizabeth! I appreciate it very much. I haven't been posting here recently, or even logging-in. But now, well --heck it's like an invitation for a prodigal's return. :)

All best.

Juan

Congratulations, Juan! This is a terrific painting and well deserves the prize bestowed. Keep us posted as to your techniques and methods. I'm sure I'm not the only one wondering what materials you use, your palette, etc.

Juan Martinez 10-08-2003 10:18 AM

Thanks to all, again.

Linda, your gentle reminder (thank you) has indeed reminded me that I have promised you I would put together a "how-to" on the sharpening of carbon pencils. Believe it or not, I've got it all together, more-or-less, but still have to do a few things before uploading it to my website. I'll let you know when it's "live". I could put something together for palettes as well. I'm in the process of revamping my website (the process is proceeding glacially) and the new one will include some kind of "tips and techniques" section.

Anyhow, all the best.

Juan

Appreciation

Juan, I personally appreciate you slumming still here with us mere mortals.TT

Wow! Congratulations Juan! The piece is truly exceptional, beautifully modulated temperatures and intensities, wonderful painting.:)

Renee Price 10-09-2003 09:09 AM

Wonderful painting! The composition is very nice and the atypical lighting makes it interesting. Fantastic job and a well deserved honor!

Thanks once more Carl, Tim, Renee! To all; I'm humbled by your praise.

Here's a closeup of the face, as per your request, Beth. Actually, it's not a true closeup, but just taken from the full-size shot and cropped. I'm getting the painting back in the next few days in order to varnish it and after that I'm having it professionally photographed (4 x5 trans). At that time, I'll get a proper closeup of it, as well.

Cudos

Juan I really like this painting a lot. I especially enjoy this closeup where I can see evidence of your paint application. A well deserved honor indeed.

Peter Jochems 10-09-2003 05:24 PM

Looks great Juan!

Michele Rushworth 10-09-2003 05:48 PM

A breathtaking work! I love all your paintings, Juan, especially this one.

I wish the Angel school where you studied had been in existence when I was growing up in Toronto. Maybe some day I'll get a chance to study there or at their Florence school.

Congratulations!

Congratulations!

I took a look at your site, very impressive. I especially love your self-portrait. It caught my husband's attention from across the room. Very intense expression.
