"Starving artist" in Yugoslavia

I received an email that I thought I would post here. I realize that most of you would probably not be interested in having a portrait done, but perhaps someone is feeling generous.

Quote:

I am unknown self-taught portrait artist.I am a student of architecture in Nis (Yugoslavia) And I prefer to paint portraits in pastel medium. As I have no money to upgrade my knowledge about painting portraits in pastel I suggest: Send me one book about painting portrait in pastel and for the return I will paint you or somebody you love,or some of your friends.

I am sending you some examples of my work.

Cynthia,

I am not a pastel artist, but I happen to have the latest Pastel Journal magazine. If you post the address of this person I can send it as a gift.

Cynthia Daniel 05-22-2003 11:14 AM

I've sent him an email requesting his address.

I'm afraid this guy may have opened a flood gate.

I say we send our books to Cynthia, she sends them on and receives back a portrait of herself.

I'd buy a used pastel book through Amazon and send it to Cynthia, if that's acceptable to her? Do you still get a commission Cynthia if it is used, or is it just using the link from your site that counts? However, paper is heavy, thus high shipping costs overseas if there's a lot of books...? Or perhaps individual sending would be good?

Michele Rushworth 05-22-2003 12:42 PM

Cynthia, I'd be happy to buy him a book on portraits in pastel, as a gift. Add my name to the list of people who'd be willing to participate.

Cynthia Daniel 05-22-2003 03:22 PM

I'm awaiting his mailing address.

Linda Brandon 05-22-2003 07:20 PM

I haven't touched my pastels in years. Think I could send the lot overseas, or would they crumble to dust?

The only thing worse than an artist without books is an artist without supplies.

Here is Marko's address:

Marko Milovanovic
Vojvode Misica 62/1
18000 Nis, Serbia & Montenegro

I think it would be easier for me if each volunteer did their own mailing.

Holly,

The Amazon order has to be from a link on my site, but don't let that stop whatever you want to do.

Cynthia Daniel 05-23-2003 11:42 AM

Marko says he would also be happy to have books in on oil and watercolor too. The thing he wants the most is likely a pretty coveted item: "Erika Pastel Portrait Video" by Daniel Greene. He says the Dakota price on this is $65, which he says he will do two portraits for it.

As we can see, the monetary valuation is very different in his country.

ntsc vs Secam

I know when I lived in France I couldn't use American videos except on my multistandard player, as France uses SECAM format and we are NTSC. And then there's England who uses PAL I beleve. Just thought I'd bring up the issue (I have no idea what Yugoslavia may use), to avoid non-compatibility issues.

PAL/MESECAM

On my video writes PAL/MESECAM

Linda Nelson 05-23-2003 11:13 PM

So if you have a PAL/MESECAM player, perhaps someone in Europe is reading this and can send you a video or two.... as for the videos we may have for you here in the U.S., I don't believe they will be viewable at all.

Linda

I heard, there is way that could change video formats. It can be recorded on PC and then with a special video card could be translated into PAL or SECAM.

Free Erica Video!

Hi,

I have the Erica video. He can have it and I will send it. Just be patient as I have been inordinately busy lately. No portraits required.

Sincerely,
