There is simply no substitute for putting in the hours.

Your mom is going to love this. It is so sweet. I am particularly fond of drawings from old photos and your handling of it is very attractive. What great expression!!

As far as the doll goes, I would smooth out the bulge behing/below the ear and leave the skull alone.

David - absolutely wonderful drawing! Don't touch the doll. She's perfect. She's not supposed to be anatomically correct. She is, after all, a toy. It's a nice contrast, in a drawing that's all about subtlety, sentimentality and emotion.
